She was born in 1953 in Oneonta, New York, and graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1978. Rubenfeld has been a leader in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights since the early 1980s. She was a founding member of the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, the first national legal organization dedicated to protecting the rights of LGBTQ+ people. She also served as the organization’s first legal director. In addition to her work with Lambda Legal, Rubenfeld has served as a board member of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and the American Civil Liberties Union.
